Gender Differences in the Experiences of Leadership Emergence Among Emergency Medicine Department Chairs

This qualitative study takes a careful look at gender differences in the experience of leadership. It explores the nuances and differences between men and women leaders in such areas as:

1) motivation for taking a leadership role

2) comfort with risk

3) sense of support and sponsorship by other leaders

The article creates a call-to-action to healthcare organizations to develop women leaders with intentionality and to create environments that foster women and their unique leadership skills.
