Physician Men Leaders in Emergency Medicine Bearing Witness to Gender-Based Discrimination

This compelling qualitative study describes the responses of 18 men who are academic department chairs in Emergency Medicine to gender-based discrimination (GBD) toward women colleagues. Key questions include:

1) How do men physician leaders perceive GBD against women colleagues?

2) How do men physician leaders respond to GBD against women colleagues?

The article makes a case that medical organizations must change the collective culture and mindset to value the contributions of both men and women physicians. Only then will all physicians work in emotionally safe environments and be empowered to speak against and end GBD.
